LES ANTÍPODES

Frontier. Utopia. Peasantry. Community.

Les antípodes is a space of intersection between live arts, contemporary arts, culture, and thought with the geographic and social landscape of the Empordà region, framed within the triangle that connects the Canigó and Bassegoda peaks with Cap de Creus, where the Pyrenees plunge into the sea. The aim of Les antípodes is to establish new relationships between the city and this environment marked by cork tree forests, vineyards, tramuntana wind, the sea and the border; contributing to the mutual recognition, respect for nature and communities, sustainable economic activity, and diverse, decentralized cultural creation, shaped from diverse perspectives that enable a new and enriching symbiosis.

The rural world, often silenced by the power of the city, has much to say about contemporary social and environmental issues. Les antípodes proposes a meeting space where the metropolis dialogues on equal terms with the telluric and social forces of Empordà to explore new relationships between urban and rural environments through mutual recognition, rigor, and curiosity, innovating, risking, and exciting, far from preconceived ideas, beyond mercantilism and open to surprise.

Frontier. Space of transit and transition where the tensions that occur at the threshold of transformation manifest; the in-between places where new perceptions, languages, and identities emerge.

Utopia. Aspiration for a just and sustainable world, intercultural and multi-species, symbiotic and decentralized.

Peasantry. Basic link of the relationship between nature and society, which produces food and, at the same time, takes care of the land and the beings that inhabit it.

Community. Memory and meanings that make it possible to understand the territory, articulate it with other realities, and preserve values and knowledge to transmit them to the future.

PROGRAMME

Live arts and the Mediterranean triad: wheat, vines and olive trees.

The programme integrates live arts with rural communities of Empordà to explore new relationships between urban life and the diverse landscape of this region, which includes fields of wheat, vineyards, and olive trees.

NUMÈRIC

Research and creation grant.

Call open from July 25 to August 25, 2024.

Numèric 2024 PDF —> CATALAN / ENGLISH / SPANISH / FRENCH

The focus of Numèric is to foster critical thinking and artistic experimentation through three research and creation residencies that articulate any discipline with digital media, processes, and formats aimed at exploring new systems and forms of relationship, experience, and expression.

Framework.

Numèric aims to explore the idea of the border, understood as a space of transit and a process of transition towards an intercultural and multispecies utopia, symbiotic and decentralized. We are interested in the tensions that occur at the threshold of transformation, the in-between places, the transitions towards new perceptions, languages, and identities.

Links.

Numèric also aims to be an opportunity to establish new connections between the different shores of the Mediterranean, an intercultural space with centuries of shared history. We seek not only to contribute to the development of new technological forms but also to create experiences and meanings with relational impact among the different shores of the sea.

Residence.

Numèric proposes an environment conducive to relationships and exchange among participants, each with an independent workspace suited to their process needs. The residencies will take place simultaneously over four weeks and will conclude with an informal presentation of the work produced. The stays will be preceded by a month of preparation and followed by two more months of monitoring. During the stays and the preparation and follow-up periods, the Numèric team will support participants and, if they wish to connect with local ecosystem agents, will strive to generate opportunities for meeting and exchange. We will also organize any activities that may arise during the residencies, making necessary contacts or dissemination. The results of the residencies may be included in the publications or public activity programs of Les antípodes, at other dates and with the appropriate budget.

Les antípodes are located in Agullana, a village of nine hundred inhabitants in Alt Empordà, at the center of the triangle connecting Canigó with Bassegoda and Cap de Creus. The village is connected to Figueres (20 km) by a bus that runs four times a day and is well connected by road and highway to the Vilafant High-Speed Train station (20 km), Perpignan (40 km), Cadaqués (50 km), Girona (60 km), Barcelona (160 km), and Montpellier (190 km).

Fields.

The proposals can be transdisciplinary or from any discipline of contemporary arts and thought, articulated with digital media, processes, and formats.

Calendar.

Proposals – Applications can be submitted between July 25 and August 25, 2024.

Verdict – Selected proposals will be announced on September 10, 2024.

Preparation – October 2024.

Residencies – They will take place from November 4 to November 30, 2024.

Follow-up – December 2024 and January 2025.

Public presentations or publications – Any public presentations or publications of the works resulting from the residencies will take place during 2025, integrated into the activity program of Les antípodes.

Endowment.

The 2024 scholarship is endowed with 5 ETH (approximately €15,000), which will be distributed according to the needs of the selected projects and for travel, accommodation, and living expenses of the participants. Numèric will manage the funds, providing the resources specified in the applications and defined during the preparation, as well as support and advice throughout the work processes. Each project will receive 0.35 ETH (approximately €1,100) as an allowance at the beginning of the residency, or its equivalent in euros, including taxes.

Jury.

Anna Carreras — Generative artist and creative coder. She uses generative algorithms and computer code to create artistic proposals that address everyday experiences or evoke memories, while also raising questions about complex Universe concepts. All of this is visually generated and handcrafted in algorithms that draw from scratch, without memory, intelligence, or learning.

cube space and lighting — Maria de la Cámara and Gabriel Paré develop dynamic spaces through light. Their work is distinguished by ongoing transgressive research that places them at the boundaries of paratheatricality. The perceptual fusion between space and light is the essence of their installations.

Roc Parés — Interactive communication artist and researcher. He has developed his career as a narrative that alternates between experimentation, production, dissemination, reception, teaching, and research. His work is characterized by poetic and critical experimentation with new technologies.

Gerard Valls Montaño — Designer and audiovisual artist who experiments with hybrid experiences at the intersection of the digital and physical worlds. Using science and technology as a basis, he explores the blurred boundaries between these two universes through visuals, materials, light, and sound, creating evolving atmospheres that transform with visitor interactions and the passage of time.

Irma Vilà Òdena — Curator, researcher, and cultural producer specializing in digital art and the intersections between art, science, and technology. Rooted in science and engineering but also closely connected to creative practice and cultural research. She undertakes and integrates international hybrid projects in science, culture, and curating shown at various festivals and museums worldwide, exemplifying the intertwining of art and science.

Oriol Caba will act as secretary and coordinator, with a voice but without a vote. He is a curator and producer at the intersection of art, culture, and insurgencies, coordinator of Les antípodes, and a member of CatalanDAO.

Requirements.

Proposals must be genuine, original, and not copied.

They can be submitted by individuals or groups of up to three people. In the case of groups, the stipend will be divided among the members.

Submissions must be in Catalan or English, regardless of the language in which the proposal will be developed, submitted via the form and may include a ten-page PDF attachment.

Proposals must be associated with an Ethereum cryptographic identity. Further instructions for generating one easily and free of charge can be found in the ‘Form’ section.

Will be favorably evaluated.

Singularity and innovation – Approaches and practices that deviate from known formulas, present a unique vision, and explore ideas, means, processes, and formats that challenge established conventions.

Transmission – Proposals that include the transfer of work done during the residency through formats, whether editorial, in-person, performative, sound-based, audiovisual, etc.

Interaction – Proposals that engage with the geographic, social, and natural environments of the Alt Empordà or the Mediterranean.

Form.

Application forms must be associated with a digital cryptographic identity, which can be generated by following these steps:

1 — Download the MetaMask app, available for iOS and Android phones, and as an extension for Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge, and Opera browsers from https://metamask.io/download/.

2 — Install the extension on your browser.

3 — Create an account (create wallet) with a strong password.

4 — Save the 12-word sequence in a secure place. This sequence is the key to recover the account or access it from other devices.

Video tutorial.

At the beginning of the form, you must sign with this cryptographic identity; if not signed, the form cannot be submitted. This operation is free of charge. Only one form can be submitted per cryptographic address, and corrections cannot be made once the submission is done.
